Nach zahlreichen Auftritten als Remixer auf Sound-Waren einschlagiger osterreichischer Musiker - von Waxolutionists über Mauracher bis hin zu Cay Taylan - legt der multidisziplinare Wiener Kava aka Thomas Pötz nun seinen ersten Longplayer vor. Jede Menge frischer Broken Beats treffen auf zerrende Stimmen, Live-Instrumente und bizarre elektronische Soundgeflechte, die sich zuweilen im Chaos verlieren. Statt butterweich runterzurutschen, brauchen manche Tracks einen zweiten Anlauf - was allerdings auch bedeutet, dass es sich hier nicht um oberflachliche Klangtapeten handelt. "Stepping aside from his heavy involvement in remixing, Austrian producer, Kava has put together his first album "The Empty Hall Sessions", achieving a superb fusion of experimental production and conceptual music.
Eclectic is one word to describe this debut. This mix of deep house, drum and bass, beats and chill out music featured creates a broad and interesting musical experience, is amplified by precise sampling, live instruments and chilling vocals.
Listening to this album for the first time is slightly puzzling. As each track takes you into a new genre and mood it's hard to find a common ground. The second time round things start making a bit more sense and you get the feeling that you're sharing a musical project that lacks a specific concept with the artist.
It's an exciting, energetic and moving journey he takes you on. Although Kava proves himself as a master of sound layering and tampering, the strongest tracks on the CD are those containing lyrics.
"Day" is a perfect example of strong and evocative vocals adding depth to musical experimentation, with the whole track remaining perfectly controlled and consistent despite the intensity of the lyrical content.
Although there are only 11 tracks on this LP, the vast differences between each track smooth over the brevity.
"You (Light My Cigarette)" is the highlight of the album and is the track that best summarises the albums conceptual confusion. Once again, stunning vocals and lyrics work in unity with the gentle yet rapid music. This is a track that has the power to move you.
"The Empty Hall Sessions" is a brilliant debut for this Austrian producer, showcasing his ability to create musical intensity through mixing live music with electronic and then finding chilling vocals to compliment it."
